Frequently asked questions

Who is this test for?

It is for adults under sustained pressure who are experiencing exhaustion, poor sleep, irritability or a sense of being unable to recover. It measures cortisol alongside thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, and the nutrients most depleted during prolonged stress.

What time of day should I take this test?

Between 7am and 10am. Cortisol follows a daily rhythm, peaking shortly after waking and falling through the day, so a morning sample is the only way to interpret the result meaningfully. An afternoon sample cannot be compared against the reference range.

Can a blood test diagnose burnout?

No. Burnout is a psychological and occupational syndrome, not a condition identified on a blood test. What this panel does is check whether a physical problem such as thyroid dysfunction or anaemia is contributing to your exhaustion, and whether prolonged stress has affected your cortisol pattern.

Do I need to fast beforehand?

Yes, please fast for 10 to 12 hours where blood sugar markers are included, and drink only water. This fits naturally with the required early morning appointment.

I am struggling with my mental health. Is a blood test enough?

No, and we would encourage you to speak to your GP or a mental health professional as well. This panel is useful for ruling out physical contributors, but it is not a substitute for mental health support. If you are in crisis, contact your GP urgently, call 111, or call the Samaritans free on 116 123.
