How to Prepare
- No fasting or dietary preparation required — eat as you normally would so your sample reflects your usual diet

- Do not collect within 4 weeks of finishing a course of antibiotics

What does the test actually measure?
Your sample undergoes DNA sequencing that identifies every bacterial, viral and archaeal species present. From that, your report gives you a species count, total microbial load, eleven functional scores, a screen of over sixty pathogen groups, levels for seventeen key beneficial microbes, and a full taxonomy list with normal ranges throughout.
What are the gut function scores?
Eleven predicted capabilities of your microbiome, each scored out of ten against a healthy population with a normal range of four to six. They cover the four main short-chain fatty acids, oxalate degradation, hydrogen sulphide, methane, IPA, hexa-LPS, TMA and beta-glucuronidase. Short-chain fatty acids are how gut bacteria convert dietary fibre into compounds that support the gut lining.
Can this test diagnose IBS, coeliac disease or IBD?
No. The laboratory states clearly that microbiome analysis is not a diagnostic test and should not be used in isolation. Your report does include similarity scores for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, but these compare your microbiome to patterns seen in people with those conditions. A high score signposts you towards further investigation with a clinician. A low score does not rule a condition out.
