Frequently asked questions

Who is this test for?

It is for men experiencing difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. It looks for the treatable medical causes, including testosterone deficiency, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, high cholesterol and raised prolactin.

Why does this test check cholesterol and blood sugar?

Erectile difficulty is often the first sign of blood vessel disease, appearing before any cardiac symptoms because the arteries involved are smaller. Diabetes and high cholesterol are among the most common underlying causes, which makes checking them clinically important rather than incidental.

How should I prepare?

Fast for 10 to 12 hours with water only, and book a morning appointment before 10am so that testosterone is measured at its natural peak alongside accurate cholesterol and glucose readings.

Why is prolactin included?

Raised prolactin suppresses testosterone and is a recognised, treatable cause of erectile difficulty and low libido. It is straightforward to identify on a blood test and is easily missed if not specifically measured.

What if all my results are normal?

Normal results are reassuring and point away from a hormonal or metabolic cause. Psychological factors, relationship stress, anxiety, alcohol and certain medications, including some antidepressants and blood pressure treatments, are common causes that blood testing cannot show. Your report will suggest appropriate next steps.
