Frequently asked questions

Who is this test for?

It is for adults experiencing thinning hair, increased shedding or a change in hair texture. It checks the causes most commonly found behind hair loss, including iron stores, thyroid function, vitamin D and B12, and the hormones that affect the hair growth cycle.

Why is ferritin so important for hair loss?

Ferritin reflects your stored iron rather than the iron circulating at that moment. Hair follicles are sensitive to low iron stores, and shedding can begin while a standard full blood count still appears normal. That is why ferritin is measured here rather than haemoglobin alone.

If I fix a deficiency, will my hair grow back?

Where hair loss is driven by a correctable deficiency such as low iron or low thyroid function, regrowth is often possible, but it is slow. The hair cycle means visible improvement usually takes three to six months after levels are corrected. Genetic pattern hair loss does not reverse with supplementation.

Should I stop my supplements before testing?

Please stop biotin containing supplements, including many hair, skin and nail products, for at least 48 hours beforehand. Biotin interferes with the laboratory method used for thyroid and hormone testing and can produce misleading results. Continue other supplements unless we advise otherwise.
