Frequently asked questions
Who is this test for?
It suits men experiencing low energy, reduced motivation, poor recovery from training or a decline in libido. It measures testosterone and SHBG alongside thyroid function, iron status and vitamin D, so that low energy is not simply attributed to hormones when another cause is present.
What time should I book my appointment?
Between 7am and 10am. Testosterone peaks in the morning and falls across the day, so a morning sample is essential. This is the single most common reason testosterone results are misinterpreted.
Why measure SHBG as well as testosterone?
Sex hormone binding globulin controls how much of your testosterone is biologically available. Two men with identical total testosterone can have very different symptoms if their SHBG differs, so measuring both gives a far more accurate picture than total testosterone alone.
Do I need to fast before this test?
Fasting is not always required for this panel, but it does no harm and is advisable if metabolic markers are included. Please drink water normally.
What if my testosterone is low?
A single low reading is not enough to start treatment. Clinical guidance is to confirm it with a second morning sample and to investigate the cause, as thyroid problems, sleep apnoea, obesity, stress and certain medications all suppress testosterone. Your report will explain the appropriate next step.
