Frequently asked questions
Who is this test for?
It is for women who have experienced a lasting reduction in sex drive. It assesses oestradiol, testosterone and SHBG, thyroid function, prolactin and iron stores, all of which influence libido in women.
When in my cycle should I take this test?
If you have regular periods, days two to five of your cycle give the clearest hormonal baseline, counting the first day of full bleeding as day one. If your cycle is irregular, absent, or you are postmenopausal, you can test at any time and should mention this when booking.
Does the contraceptive pill affect my results?
Yes, significantly. Hormonal contraception suppresses your natural hormone production and raises SHBG, which lowers available testosterone. Results can still be useful, but they must be interpreted in that context, so please tell us what you are taking when you book.
Why is testosterone measured in a women's panel?
Women produce testosterone too, and it contributes meaningfully to libido, energy and mood. Levels naturally decline with age and fall further after surgical menopause, so it is a relevant marker rather than a male-only one.
Do I need to fast?
Fasting is not required for this panel. Please avoid biotin containing supplements for 48 hours, as biotin interferes with hormone and thyroid testing.
