How to prepare

Who is this test for?
It is a focused check of the three deficiencies most often found behind tiredness, low mood, hair thinning and poor concentration. It measures ferritin and iron status, vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
When is the best time to test?
A morning sample is preferable, taken before any iron supplement that day. Serum iron follows a daily rhythm and falls through the afternoon, so morning testing gives more consistent results.
Will recent supplements affect my results?
Yes. Iron supplements can raise serum iron within hours, and recent B12 supplementation or injections raise measured B12 substantially. Where possible, pause oral supplements for one to two weeks so the results reflect your true status.
Why is ferritin more useful than a standard iron test?
Ferritin reflects your iron stores rather than the amount circulating at that moment. Stores deplete first, so ferritin identifies iron deficiency at an earlier stage, often well before anaemia appears on a full blood count.
Is vitamin D deficiency common in the UK?
Yes, particularly between October and March, when UK sunlight is too weak for the skin to produce meaningful amounts. Public health guidance recommends considering a daily supplement through the winter months, and testing shows whether your level is genuinely sufficient.
