The PSA (Total Prostate Specific Antigen) test measures the level of PSA, a protein made by the prostate gland. PSA levels can be raised for many reasons, including benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, and cancer. PSA may also rise temporarily due to non-medical factors, such as vigorous exercise, ejaculation, or recent urological procedures.

How to prepare
How to prepare
- Avoid vigorous exercise, particularly cycling, for 48 hours before your test.
- Avoid ejaculation for 48 hours before your test.
- Inform us if you are taking any prostate medications (such as finasteride or dutasteride), as these can lower PSA levels.
- Do not book this test if you currently have a urinary tract infection. Wait until the infection has cleared.
- If you have had recent prostate surgery or procedures, please check with your GP before taking this test.
