Frequently asked questions

Who is this test for?

It is for women wanting a broad assessment of hormonal balance, whether because of irregular cycles, PMS, mood changes, acne, or unexplained weight and energy changes. It covers oestradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH, testosterone, SHBG, prolactin and thyroid function.

When in my cycle should I be tested?

Days two to five for the main hormones. If progesterone is included, it needs to be measured in the second half of the cycle, around day 21 of a 28 day cycle, so you may need two samples for a complete picture. We will advise based on your cycle length.

Does hormonal contraception change the results?

Yes. The pill, implant, injection and hormonal coil all suppress or alter natural hormone production. Results are still measurable but must be read in that context, so please tell us what you use when booking.

What does prolactin indicate?

Raised prolactin can disrupt ovulation and cause irregular or absent periods, and occasionally breast discharge. It is a treatable cause of hormonal disturbance that would otherwise be missed, which is why it is included here.

Do I need to fast?

Fasting is not required. Please avoid biotin supplements for 48 hours before testing, as biotin interferes with the laboratory methods used for hormone and thyroid analysis.
