How do I prepare for this test?

Fasting for 8-12 hours before your test (water only) is recommended where glucose, cholesterol or triglyceride accuracy matters. Book your sample between 7:00am and 10:00am. Stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous exercise, heavy meals and supplements including iron, B12, multivitamins and biotin for 48 hours beforehand. Continue any prescribed medication unless your doctor has told you otherwise.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly, and your results are reviewed by a doctor before you receive them. This test is not a diagnosis on its own, so discuss anything unexpected with your GP or a clinician.

This test measures Total calcium in your blood. Calcium is tightly controlled by the parathyroid glands, kidneys and vitamin D, so the result reflects how well that system is working.

People with bone pain, muscle cramps, fatigue or a history of kidney stones. It is also used to follow up abnormal vitamin D results and to assess parathyroid function.
