Frequently asked questions

Who is this test for?

It is for women who suspect they are perimenopausal or menopausal, or who want to understand symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, disturbed sleep, mood changes or brain fog. It measures FSH, LH and oestradiol alongside thyroid function.

Can a blood test confirm I am menopausal?

Not on its own, and this is important. In women over 45, menopause is diagnosed clinically from symptoms and menstrual pattern rather than by blood test, because hormone levels fluctuate widely during perimenopause. A normal FSH does not rule out perimenopause. Testing is most useful under 45, or where the picture is unclear.

When should I take the sample?

If you are still having periods, days two to five give the most interpretable result. If your periods have stopped or become unpredictable, test at any time. Because levels fluctuate, repeating the test after four to six weeks is sometimes recommended.

Does HRT affect the results?

Yes. HRT alters oestradiol and FSH, so results taken while on treatment cannot be used to establish menopausal status. They can be useful for monitoring treatment. Tell us what you are taking, including the type and dose, when booking.

Why check thyroid function as well?

Thyroid disorders produce symptoms that closely mimic perimenopause, including fatigue, weight change, low mood and poor concentration. Checking both together prevents a treatable thyroid problem from being mistaken for menopause.
